This is the homecoming day in terms of the charity, when we get come through the Lake District to overnight at Brathay, home of the Brathay Trust and the location where so much of their youth work is undertaken. Brathay is also the home of the famous 10 in 10 and Windermere Marathons that I am taking part in in May.

The route crosses Windermere lake via the ferry at Bowness.

The route doesn’t follows the trail rather than the road after Bowness, a divergence from the 10 in 10 route intended to hero the lake, but the road is a fine alternative. The trail does take in Wray Castle, a fantasy castle built as a home, just before Ambleside.

Either Wray Castle or Hawkshead village will help us put Beatrix Potter firmly on the map. Thew family used Wray for a holiday home, whilst in Hawkshead a gallery (currently closed for repair) celebrates her work.
