My Big Tour of England gets underway on 1st July – 13 days from now. Throughout the tour I will be eating anything and everything. That’s because I am:
- Trained as an ultrarunner to make the best of any situation. The distances I run can’t be sustained by gels and I have to be able to get down whatever is available. They say you should eat what you train on, but that definitely isn’t possible on a rough sleeping fast packing adventure or when travelling to run in the Balkan Mountains of North Macedonia.
- Wanting to celebrate the local cuisine in every area – so that’s Pease Pudding Cold in Durham, Pasty in Cornwall, Rowntree’s in York, cheddar in Cheddar and a pint of prawns in Fowey…
- Going to keep the mid-run and post-run recovery consistent with Voom Nutrition. I have come to love Voom Nutrition, the brand that supplies Brathay’s 10 in 10 challenge and their Windermere Marathon. Voom just seems to get everything right .
Why Voom?
Fortunately for me I had a few choices for a nutrition supplier for the Tour but I’m going with Voom. Here’s why:
- Their recovery fudge and recovery shakes give me quick access to whay proteins for rapid muscle repair. Other protein supplemented products just taste so wrong to me, but these don’t. I was very reliant on the fudge when push came to shove in my recent completion of the infamous Tunnel 200. The shakes were amazing on the finish line immediately after each of the 10 marathons in 10 days at Brathay. The science says the body deals with protein most effectively in the 30 mins post-exercise.I will be having these rigorously.
- The Pocket Rocket energy bars pack in much more than gels and give the stomach something to work on (and they are really bouncy and invigorating fruit flavours). They are textured just right to bite through gently and you can feel them starting to work really quickly. I’ll use these as mid run pick me ups. Some of them have caffeine too, something I like to use in small amounts to have the best boost effect on the occasions when I do use them.
- Voom Hydrate – this electrolyte drink is just in two great flavours, lemon and lime and orange and mango. The mango is a bit on the jazzy side colour-wise, but both are spot on in the important areas of keeping the body hydrated and balanced and, of course, taste.
