Journey journal
A simpler day, less bishoping, more lorries from the start. There was Scotch Corner to negotiate. The route South was a little busy on the roads, until getting to Bedale. Nevertheless the roadside flora was pretty spectacular in places
At Bedale the financially cautious percuniary reputation of Yorkshire was blown away as my venture into the baker to buy a fat scamp saw several donatons from shoppers who had gone in for bread rolls and instead spent a fiver on the Brathay Trust. “Deprived youngsters” was all it took to trigger the generosity.
Charis travelled to Rishi’s Richmond and then Fountain Abbey a huge dissolute monastery on the outskirts of Ripon.
We finished up in a bit of a hush and shush situation as Ripon Cathedral unleashed posh prayers with a very competent choir. The music was lovely though I really wanted to see the wooden carvings that inspired Lewis Carrol. Charis did fulfil her ambition to see an abbot called Theobald who she had heard about on her visit to the Abbey ruins.
‘Where I live’
Sharon and Harvey from Taylor the Baker in Bedale loved Yorkshire curd tart but were a bit vague about the ingredients when pressed. They were such welcoming people.
Fuel
Stottie – a hangover from yesterday and cross bred with Yorkshire today as we put Wensleydale and The Mercers of Yorkshire Red Onion marmalade into these big billowy bouncy white buns that Charis had grabbed in Gereggs in Newcastle.
On the run I demolished a Fat Scamp fruit cake, a modern easier to eat take on the rock hard Fat Rascal.
I also enjoyed a bottle of Timothy Taylor before bed. I really enjoyed it.

Shopkeeping
Bedale and Ripon looked quite successful, and not all coffee and barbers.

Events and Festivals
Charis went to Richmond to see how the town is gearing up for the an election under a Sunak spotlight. What she found was almost no signs of political allegiance. So she visited the Station Community Hub, buying a bar of Richmond soap by The Richmond Soap Company for our prizes box and also visiting St Martin’s Priory, a lesser known ruin that has been comandeered by a farm.
Inspiration
Charis says “One man’s ruin is another’s admirable jewell”.
